Treating A Toothache In Winchester: What Are My Options?

Toothaches can be both painful and stressful. Not knowing the cause of a toothache paired with not knowing which treatment is necessary can be nerve-wracking, so the team at Nova Dental is here to calm your fears and let you know that we can handle any damaged tooth! Whether you have a cavity, cracked tooth, infection, or a missing tooth, we can repair your dental health issues and get you back to your day-to-day life. Here are a few of the most common restorative procedures:

1. Dental Filling

Toothaches are often caused by cavities. Even if your tooth does not have a large cavity, the damage to your enamel and dentin can make your tooth more sensitive to heat, cold, and pressure. You may notice that your tooth hurts when biting down on food, or it may start to ache even when you’re not chewing anything.

If this is the case, a dental filling is usually the best option for restoring your tooth. Dr. Guldalian will trim away the damaged enamel, fill your tooth with a composite dental resin, and reshape and restore your tooth to provide you with relief from the pain and discomfort of a toothache.

2. Dental Crown

Dental crowns are usually recommended for cavities that are too large to treat with a filling, or to replace old, worn-out fillings. Unlike fillings, dental crowns cover up your entire tooth structure after it’s been trimmed. Essentially, they function as a false tooth, covering up your remaining natural enamel all the way down to the gum line. This protects your tooth from further damage.

3. Root Canal Therapy

If you do not get a filling or crown in time, your cavity may progress into a tooth infection. This happens when the hard, outer layers of enamel and dentin are destroyed by a cavity, or by an oral injury that cracks the tooth. This exposes the vulnerable pulp, which keeps your tooth alive.

If left untreated, the infection will destroy your pulp and kill your tooth. Root canal therapy is used to prevent this. Dr. Guldalian will open a small hole in your tooth and remove all the damaged and decayed material. Then, the tooth will be cleaned, filled, and restored with a filling or a dental crown, preventing further damage.

4. Tooth Extraction & Replacement

This is typically only recommended in the most extreme cases. At Nova Dental, we will always do our best to save your natural tooth whenever possible. If you come in for a toothache and Dr. Guldalian determines that it’s not possible to save the tooth with a root canal, or root canal treatment fails, the tooth may need to be extracted.

Once your tooth has been extracted, it will need to be replaced with a partial denture, a dental bridge, or a dental implant. It’s important to replace your tooth quickly to avoid additional complications, such as teeth shifting toward your now-empty socket.
